    Thank you for such an intelligent, scholarly investigation. I am half Swedish and half Scottish. Very proud of my Ancestors, yet it must be historically accepted that my Norsemen plundered and raided everywhere they Viking went. Images of Norse and Celt Deities became confused. I am now drinking from a simple ceramic Glogg cauldron. Happy Winter Solstice. Sheila Gunvor. Love n Light.

    Thank you, but very confusing from a geological aspect. Ireland and the Western Isles of Scotland are in the West, whereas Norway is in East. Granted in Pangea and Techtonic movements there was a joining. However this was even before Jurassic period of Dinasaurs.

    An not unknown author named Rudolf Grosse wrote a book about the cauldron in 1963. In danish it is called: Sølvkarret fra Gundestrup. En gåde fra den keltiske kunst. It can still be bought in first edition at a low price. Grosse shows every picture is filled with symbolism. The true interpretation will be impossible to find. But what the archaeologists and the curators say is just bla bla bla. The pictures does not depict myths. If they did we would know alot more about the celts. The first picture that made sence to me is the one with three bulls. And in front of each bull stands a man with a drawn sword. And on the top and bottom, wild beasts are running towards the side. It tells that bull offering drives away lower forces.

      @@TheSOLARMUSIC If you want a good example of Vikings stealing Celtic stuff then the Oseburg ship burial provides one. It's a bucket with a seated figure sometimes called a buddha at the bases of the handle and likely comes from Ireland. The figure is quite Celtic in style and while the Irish sat on the ground like the ancient Celts, the seated figure could have a connection with a Cernunnos like figure in that it represents a holy figure. The chest of the figure is similar to that of St. Mathew from the Book of Durrow with a prominent cross so likely represents a religious figure. The Golden Horns of Gallehus, Denmark are an example of native religious art and while a horned figure does appear it's quite different to that of the cauldron. Also a shame that the original horns were melted down by a nutjob jeweller who stole them from a museum so he could make some earrings and other things. Fortunately drawings of the originals existed for recontructions to be made.

    Gud Dag Herr Nielsen! It pains me to hear that Orpheus is still considered a Greek in your view and not a Thracian , as shown by late Ivan Linforth researcher and writer of The Arts of Orpheus...and as shown by the Fragments in Greek about Orpheus in Hermanpn Diels' Fragmente Der Vorsokratiker. Your museum hosted this find and for years it Wrongly assigned it to be of Celtic origin until N K Sandars strongly showed the error and reassigned it to Thrace based on mythological imagery (Thracian griffin. etc.)in his work Prehistoric Art in Europe(Pelikan Publishing).

    How these scholars can come up with so many of these bogus stories and believe them is beyond me. It’s clearly, by the depictions a Celtic or Germanic cauldron. The very neck rings depicted are found for example in the Netherlands and many other Northern European countries. Just because it wasn’t known before, that people at that place and time could make silverware, doesn’t mean they couldn’t and that that means it was made somewhere else. Rather this cauldron is potential evidence that they COULD!

  • @Survivethejive

    Why would Orpheus be depicted in this way? where is his harp? Wy does he hold a CELTIC torque?? The only reason they identify this as Orpheus is because he has animals around him and because the cauldron may have been made in Thrace and Greeks identified Orpheus as a Thracian. Tenuous, since this is evidently not a piece of Greek or Thracian art, but Celtic art.

    My hypothesis is that the gundestrup cauldron was under Merovingian (Salian Franks before that) ownership until Charlemagne. Then it came to be held by my ancestor, William of Gellone. It came down through history to my ancestor François Garon de Libourno and with his friends and family, it was returned to Denmark. It was not a cauldron. I have theorized that the cauldron was to be the sysbol of a unified Celtic nation. Each of the 13 panels has been to be the work of different artisans, whom I believe were each part of the Celtic realm. I believe that the Druids realized that the time for unification was now, and the ideal object for unification was a traveling kingship symbol, which would eventually have become lodged in a permanent place. Had it not been for the murder and burial in the bog, the Druidic plan would have changed the outcome of bloody warfare for the next 2,000 years in Europe. Instead there would have been a settled, unified, and advanced nation. One can only imagine what our world would have been like without the insanity of colonialism.

    • @kevina6587
      @kevina6587 7 років тому

      like an EU before the EU ? lol...Britain was the centre of Druidic religion and they just voted down the EU, so little of your fantasy has any roots in reality. The druids couldn't even unite and co ordinate an effective ousting of the Romans. Plus they were a bloodthirsty barbarian sect, well rid of them . They weren't UN peace keepers. The past isn't the present you know, no matter how much you want it to reflect your personal dreams.

    • @shivkumarbhatia1327

      My theory is that on this Cauldron you see image of a female diety or goddess in sitting posture and flanked by two elephants. Now in Hinduism Goddess Laxmi or goddess of wealth is also portrayed with 2 Elephants. you see why this has significant value is because there were no elephants in Europe, so there might be about linkage between people originating from Bharat or Indian subcontinent who may have settled there. There is also a male figure sitting in meditation and surrounded by animals. This may be Pashupati God or Shiva God. This figure is also there on Harrapan civilisation seals found in Mohenjo-Daro , now geographically located in Pakistan. This is my theory or hypothesis.

    Hey, Eadmonn Ua Cuinn, wake up yourself. :) The Gundestrup Cauldron ISN'T "Celtic" per se, or the product of any ONE group. It shows influence from several. The silver work is consistent with Celtic silver work, but also with Thracian silver work, and the imagery on it can be linked, not only to the Celts and Thracians, but to the Cimbri, who were Teutons. Even Roman influence is evident. Ancient peoples were influenced by other tribes and groups around them. The traded with each other, plundered from each other, intermarried, etc. Wood carving from the Balkans was influenced by Norse carving. The Coppergate Anglo-Saxon helmet in England is almost identical to helmets found in Scandinavia. Statues of the Buddha on the Silk Road were influenced by sculpture from ancient Greece. There was a sharing, bits of cultural overlap, and the beautiful Gundestrup Cauldron embodies this, making it not an "Irish thing" but a more broadly "human" one.
